The Southern bottomland hardwoods encompass 30.8 million acres from Virginia, south ro the sub-tropical hardwood forests of south Florida, west to eastern Texas and Oklahoma, and north up the Mississippi River Valley to southern Illinois and Indiana. While these species have similar characteristics with which to survive in low-land areas, the differences in geomorphology, physiography, climate, species migration, soils, and soil-water relations have created a heterogenous mixture of tree species.
