This 12,303-acre WMA was purchased in 1970 with additional tracts being added in recent years. It is about 2 miles west of Scotland and can be accessed from Gulf Mountain Road, Arkansas Highway 389, Andrew Road and Low Gap Cemetery Road. The area is primarily upland hardwoods and pine with 1,000 acres of open fields. Topography is gently rolling to mountainous with elevations ranging from 700-1,500 feet msl. A variety of game species inhabit the area, including deer, bear, turkey, squirrel, rabbit and quail. Habitat management efforts include woodland and savanna restoration and maintaining field systems. Management tools include prescribed fire, disking and forest thinning. Visitors should take advantage of the watchable wildlife hiking trail and auto tour as well as swimming, canoeing and fishing opportunities along the 5.4-mile stretch of Little Red River bordering the property.
Gulf Mountain has six primitive camping areas with 118 camping units.
